New Projects, New Skills

Every time I start a new project I have to learn something brand new to get it done, pretty much without fail.  Somethings have been pretty easy like learning how to work with 4 way stretch material, the real secret there for me was learning about the zigzag stitch and using correct tension, which took me a lot longer to figure out than it should have, or putting in a zipper the right way.  I think, for me, one of the reasons I have to learn something new every time I make something new, is I don’t every want to wear the same costume again.  I love my Powergirl costume, and it wasn’t even that hard to make, but the idea of wearing it again doesn’t bring me any joy.  I love making the look more than wearing it.  My brother has worn his Death Stroke costume now to 3 different cons, that’s just not for me.  I maybe should put some more time and effort into each look, but that’s less fun.  It has also helped me learn a lot more skills in a shorter amount of time than if I perfected one look for multiple cons. I think one of the most important things I’ve learned so far, is the importance of seam allowance.  I have wasted so much or had to add strips to things because I cut right along my patterns.  Bad decisions.  But I’ve learned.  And that’s really all that matters.  So, I’ll keep trying and getting bored with one costume and adding to my collection.

That new Batgirl is calling my name, and I’ve never made a pair of leggings before.

Wonder Woman is Tricky?

Earlier this week I was reading an interesting post by Gail Simone, my favorite comic book writer, on her tumblr talking about how Wonder Woman might not be as tricky as those with power keep saying she is, but it is more a matter of perspective.  For my generation we think of the DC animated Universe first.  All the time.  Every time.

But why does it have to be a Wonder Woman movie that we all keep talking about when they talk about a super hero movie with a female lead.  Wonder Woman isn’t my favorite, but she is the first female superhero to come to mind that is not defined by a man in some way, Supergirl is Superman’s cousin, Batgirl is Batman’s protégée, Black Canary is Green Arrow’s girlfriend/wife, Batwoman is weirdly connected yet not connected, Wasp is married to Antman, Star Sapphire(Carol Farris) is married to Green Lantern(Hal Jordan), Kitty Pryde, Jean Grey, Rouge, and so many more, are students of Prof. X’s.  The list goes on and on like this.  I have so many mixed feeling on that part of the issue.  Most of my favorite superheroes are on this list.  For how oversaturated the market is with superheroes, we may have 5 prime time network shows featuring the superhero universe on television as soon as the spring, there isn’t a single one of them with a woman as the main character.  I can only think of one genera show on TV right now that is lead by a female lead on network prime time right now and that’s Emma Swan on Once Upon a Time.

So my point is I want a female superhero TV show or Movie, and sooner rather than later.  However selfishly I want all of the movies to be directed by men so I can be the first woman to direct a superhero movie for a large studio.

Baltimore Comic Con Pictures

At BCC I went as Powergirl and my brother went as Death Stroke.  Here are some of the awesome cosplayers we saw there.  All of the people we met there were super friendly and the floor was one of my favorites.  My only real criticism was that there weren’t enough panels and even more importantly they weren’t strategically placed panels.  It may not have been the best plan to put artist panels against artist panels, and comic book industry panels against other comic book industry panels.  But the atmosphere was awesome, and for me that can be even more important.  Nice people attending and running these shows is the number 1 thing for me.  Making friends and having a great time can make up for the lack of somethings that I want.

TeenTitans vs. Death Stroke.
These kids came out of no where to attack my brother. That was so perfect. Everyone was in character. You can see the smiles on the titans’ faces.

Even The Avengers eventually start to age

IMG_20130907_135335

I did my best to take as many pictures with as many Supergirls as I could. It just made me happy.

These are some great XMen but to be honest I’m not sure which XMen they are.

Darth’s costume lit up and flashed. So much joy.

Wonder Woman and Black Canary. I like that they took their costumes from the Bombshell Toy Line.

There are so many costumes where I stop for a second and think people are doing Xena and Gabby that I get so excited when it really is Xena and Gabby

Link, a staple at every Con

This Kid is the GREATEST cosplayer alive. He was so excited to be the Doctor and couldn’t be more into everything he saw. Awesome job Doctor.

His mustache was drawn on pretty well, it took a few seconds to realize it was just marker.

T I found some more Supergirls, and Lobo.

IMG_20130907_164354

I have to find Static Shock at every Convention, it isn’t really a convention without him.

IMG_20130907_165437

Since this was the convention where everyone was talking about Batwoman it’s good to know she was already there taking care of herself.

IMG_20130907_170302

Tron! I think it’s super awesome when people’s costumes light up.

IMG_20130907_171612

There were a whole bunch of different Wonder Women at BCC, and they all came with a different cool way to play her

Raven started yelling at Death Stroke across the lobby. It was a magical moment.

Now this last picture is my personal favorite.  See I did something dumb, I forgot to take a picture of me and my brother together.  He just started college too, so I can’t just bug him at home to take a picture with me.  I searched far and wide, and I found this.

Couples Costumes

Couples costumes are some of the best costumes for comic cons.  For last comic con I created a Green Arrow and Black Canary costume for my parents, I’m currently working on a Battlestar Glacatica costume for my boyfriend and me.  My friend and I did a Batgirl and Robin for Halloween a couple of years ago.  Couples don’t have to be a couple , I’ve seen twin brothers and sisters do Luke and Leia.  Fathers and sons can do Batman and Robin, which is awesome.  (RIP Damien Wayne)  Groups of friends can be the crew of Serenity.

I don't know these kids, I just think it's one of the cutest cosplays ever.

I don’t know these kids, I just think it’s one of the cutest cosplays ever.

It’s not that cosplay isn’t fun on your own but if you can have someone doing it with you it gets more fun.  I enjoy going out in costume with my friends and acting as if nothing is different about us.  It’s fun just to be different sometimes.  What are some of the fun things that you and your friends have done?

Nerds and Crafting

From my experience nerds love to craft.  I sew, crochet, knit, bake and am a film maker by profession.  I also dance, play the sax and clarinet, and sing.  In the art world I’m like a pig in slop.  And I’m not the only one.  There is a reason there are blogs like Geek Crafts, Bored and Crafty, Pixelated Mushroom (even if she hasn’t posted in 3 months) and so many more.  I personally eat them up.

But what brings these two groups together?  So many nerds are crafter and crafters are nerds.  I think it has to do with both groups are smart and like to be constantly stimulated.  Imagination is the most important skill for a crafter who wants to create anything beyond exactly what a pattern calls for, even just the first question of what color to make a hat or what is the right picture to take when going out to work on their photography portfolios.

My mom is a cross stitcher, she calls it just paint by numbers but how excited she gets when she’s looking at all the different colors of floss or all the different patters and what to do with the finished product, there is a lot of imagination happening.

I created this costume from clothes I already had in my wardrobe.

Nerds are the same way.  We watch our favorite show and our brains start turning about what way can we bring this into our lives.  I just watched the re-imagined Battlestar Glacatica last month for the first time and by the end of the third season I was already planning on making my own costumes of my favorite couple, Callie and the Chief.  We put stickers on our laptops and Starfleet Academy Alumni window clings on our cars.  That is awesome.

Imagination, that’s what the world really needs more of.  Don’t forget to use yours today.

SteamPunk

I love SteamPunk! I think it has an incredibly equalizing property that most cosplay doesn’t have.  What I mean is that when I dress up as Batgirl, no matter how much I love Barbra Gordon and how much I know about her, it never feels like it’s enough when I go to shows.  Someone will inevitably start talking to me about her and there will come a time in the conversation where I start smiling and nodding.  And I know a lot about her.  It just never feels like enough.  When I wear my Dalek dress, I will run into another Whovian who will put my knowledge to shame.  It’s not that I’m not obsessive.  Ask my friends, I am a constant fountain of weird nerdy babble, I make nerdy clothes that I can wear to the office, but I’m obsessive all over the place.

Nathan Fillion as Rick Castle learning about SteamPunk in Season 3 episode Punked

This is where SteamPunk is wonderful.  SteamPunk looks cool and it doesn’t have a huge backstory I need to know to wear the clothes.  I understand the concept, steam powered engines, we never split the atom, futuristic Victorian style.  All of these things are awesome.  Also, I have yet to mean a NerdGirl who doesn’t like any excuse to wear a corset.
