Baltimore Comic Con Pictures

At BCC I went as Powergirl and my brother went as Death Stroke.  Here are some of the awesome cosplayers we saw there.  All of the people we met there were super friendly and the floor was one of my favorites.  My only real criticism was that there weren’t enough panels and even more importantly they weren’t strategically placed panels.  It may not have been the best plan to put artist panels against artist panels, and comic book industry panels against other comic book industry panels.  But the atmosphere was awesome, and for me that can be even more important.  Nice people attending and running these shows is the number 1 thing for me.  Making friends and having a great time can make up for the lack of somethings that I want.

TeenTitans vs. Death Stroke.
These kids came out of no where to attack my brother. That was so perfect. Everyone was in character. You can see the smiles on the titans’ faces.

Even The Avengers eventually start to age

I did my best to take as many pictures with as many Supergirls as I could. It just made me happy.

Someone lost their Blossom, I hope she found her Trainer.

These are some great XMen but to be honest I’m not sure which XMen they are.

Darth’s costume lit up and flashed. So much joy.

Wonder Woman and Black Canary. I like that they took their costumes from the Bombshell Toy Line.

There are so many costumes where I stop for a second and think people are doing Xena and Gabby that I get so excited when it really is Xena and Gabby

Link, a staple at every Con

This Kid is the GREATEST cosplayer alive. He was so excited to be the Doctor and couldn’t be more into everything he saw. Awesome job Doctor.

His mustache was drawn on pretty well, it took a few seconds to realize it was just marker.

T I found some more Supergirls, and Lobo.

I have to find Static Shock at every Convention, it isn’t really a convention without him.

Since this was the convention where everyone was talking about Batwoman it’s good to know she was already there taking care of herself.

Tron! I think it’s super awesome when people’s costumes light up.

There were a whole bunch of different Wonder Women at BCC, and they all came with a different cool way to play her

Raven started yelling at Death Stroke across the lobby. It was a magical moment.

I love her utility belt.

My favorite of all the Supergirls I found that weekend

Now this last picture is my personal favorite.  See I did something dumb, I forgot to take a picture of me and my brother together.  He just started college too, so I can’t just bug him at home to take a picture with me.  I searched far and wide, and I found this.

Awesome nerdiness from around the net

Well there have been some really cool things on the internet lately.  I have to say that for me the ones that have really stuck as of late have been Doctor Who themed.  But there is just so much cool stuff going on and now that  we are in the early days of convention season there should be even more coming soon.

Geek Chic Home Decor

Nerd Fashion doesn’t have to end with what you put on your body.  So many people have nerded up their houses. It seems that the most popular room to do it in is a kid’s room or in a nursery.  It makes sense in a lot of ways because then as an adult you have it but you don’t have to see it all the time.  Or if someone comes to visit they don’t think, Wow this is intense.  I’m  a big fan of the TARDIS wall sticker and probably would put that somewhere in my apartment for people to see.  Or a Blue door to the outside would be a nice subtle way for a geek reference.

Latte art

A couple of days ago I was sitting in one of my favorite coffee shops writing and I noticed a sign on the door talking about a contest for latte art.  I started thinking about all of the cool things you can do with latte foam.  Now, may I present to you a collection of nerd foam.

What a nerdy weekend

This saturday was not only May the 4th, or Star Wars Day, but it was also Free Comic Book day.  What a great day to be a nerd.  I, of course, had to dress for the occasion.  I wore my Darth Vader t-shirt and Star Wars skirt.  When I went to the comic book store, it was awesome seeing storm troopers everywhere.  I also got a graphic novel I’ve been looking for, for about a year and a half- FEAR ITSELF.  It’s been so hard to find it.  You can’t shake a stick in a comic book store without finding part of the story, the Captain America story or the Thor story, but finding the miniseries has been so hard.  I finally got it.  I’m super pumped.  And I got to find it while being all decked out in my nerd clothes.  I will be reading it later wearing my Marvel skirt, reading my Marvel story.  It’s perfect.

Although, the comic books for free comic book day this year weren’t as good as they have been the past couple of years, oh well.  You win some, you lose some.

Anyone else have a good free comic book day?

Star Wars vs. Star Trek

Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Lucas vs. Roddenberry.  The ultimate nerd battle. When I was about 3 years old the local television station would put on Star Trek Next Generation and then Seasame Street before my bed time.  When I was 6 I first saw the original Star Wars trilogy and had to keep watching for the next one because at the end of every movie, as my dad said, a secret would be reviled and I couldn’t wait to see what it was.  For the longest time I would pick Star Wars, the space battle, good vs. evil.  Everything is laid out in black and white.  Literally, Darth Vader wears black Luke wears white.  Their light sabers are opposite colors.  There isn’t a lot of grey area in Star Wars and as a kid that’s exactly what you’re looking for.

Star Trek lives in the grey.  Social issues are where they thrive.  It was an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise that made me really start to understand what rape and AIDS were.  I watched the episode Stigma when I was 12, so although we learned about it in school and I saw things about it in other places on the media or in the news but it was seeing in a context like that, that made it click.  After the episode I talked about what it all meant with my dad.  It was a relatively non-painful awkward way to have these lofty complicated topics brought up and then we could talk about them.  As a kid, it was still too heavy but as an adult I really appreciate it and the complexity of it.  Deep Space 9 was amazing at dealing with social issues, although my favorite episode will probably always the Magnificent Ferengi, but the episodes that take place partly in the 1950s where you don’t know if Deep Space 9 is real on in the head of the author.  I thing that it’s just so fascinating but until I was in my 20’s it was just too much and not really my thing.  That’s what’s missing from the new Star Trek movies for me.  But at the same time I can’t imagine a social issues J.J. Abrams movie.  As he has stated in the past this is Star Trek for the non-Trekkie.

Slave Leia

Slave Leia.

It is probably the most over done costume in all of existence.  Jennifer Aniston did it on Friends, Alessandra Torresani (of Caprica fame) did it for the music video Tonight I’m Frakking You,  Kaley Cuoco even did a parody PSA  telling women that there are other hot girl outfits and they don’t have to dress as slave Leia.  Although a joke, it is getting a little sad how over used Slave Leia is whenever a nerd is supposed to be fantasizing about a hot girl.  Nerds have more than one interest.  And have more than one outfit they look great in.  Next time a show is having a nerd fantasize maybe they could use Powergirl.  Bust out of the rut we’re in.
