How Do You Feel?

I went shopping with a friend from work this weekend, we were working on updating her wardrobe, just getting a couple of staples that she could mix into what she already has and elevate her style as a whole. Every time she would try on a new piece of clothing I would ask her how she felt, after the second or third outfit I realized we were speaking about two different kinds of feelings, she was telling me how the clothes felt in a physical sense, were they soft, tight, lose, anything like that. I was confused, that wasn’t telling me anything. I realized I was talking about emotions, was it making her feel confidents, happy, excited, did she feel sexy in what she was wearing. We recalibrated and met somewhere in the middle. She started telling me about how she was feeling, did it make her feel good about herself, and I listened to when she thought something wasn’t fitting the right way. We discussed what to look for in proper fit of a garnment, and we talked about how sometimes she was wearing the wrong size trying to hide her body. I am also not a tiny lady, and I know the allure of wearing an outfit too big to hid the parts of my body that I don’t like to look at in the mirror when I go to the bathroom or catch my reflection in a window. It can feel nice to pretend that things are different, but I am who I am, and there are some really nice parts of my body, just like my friend’s body.  Sure there are things I could make “better” but that would also mean giving up cheese, and craft service at work, and I don’t want to do that, if I did, I already would have.

However, I have ended up on a tangent about how wonderful cheese is, and even if that is true, it is not my point.  My point is that when I am wearing clothes, and even more, when I am cosplaying, I am looking to FEEL a certain way,  I want to embody the character that I’m playing, that’s why I spend a solid hour or more coming up with the right pose.  I want to know I have the whole package and that I love what it is that I’m wearing.

I hope when everyone gets dressed in the morning they don’t ask how this looks, but how do I feel, because that is the key, for me, to being happy all day and not bored by lunch.

For the last couple of months I’ve been casting a show all about people following their dreams. It’s been really fun to get to talk to people who have such a passion for different things that I thought I could never imagine having. My boss and I were talking in a coffee shop in Atlanta about what would be our dream business that had nothing to do with working in TV. I knew mine right away. It was the idea of having classy women’s nerd clothing. I think there’s such a hole in the market right now. Don’t get me wrong, I own more graphic tees and nerdy skirts than one person really should. And I’ve seen plenty of Black Milk leggings, I own Her Universe clothes, but they’re still not sophisticated. I know that would be my concept, but I have no idea what that even means. A man can add a cool belt buckle or an awesome tie, but what do we woman have? I think an awesome nerdy pair of heels is a great start for that nerdy touch to an office. I do work in an office where I can (but technically am not allowed to) wear shorts to work when it’s hot, but I’m not really sure I could handle working anywhere that doesn’t let me let my geek flag fly. However, even in my non-traditional office there are so many things that are not ok.  My office is about 65% women, and it’s not a place where women wear teeshirts on a regular basis, but my boss doesn’t go more than 3 days without a Star Wars tee or sporting his favorite sports team.  I guess that says something more about attitudes than what specifically is going on in my office.  About 3 out of 5 day a week I wear my TeeShirt of the day hoodies to work, so I may just be saying crazy things.  Either way, I would like there to be more classic and classy nerd clothing that I could wear out.  Internet, please get on that.  Thanks.

Take Chances, Make Mistakes, Get Messy WaWahoooo

When I was in college all film majors at my school were required to take a visual aesthetics class.  We talked a lot about fine art, architecture,  and fashion among other topics.  The professor was explaining that no one wears literal interpretations on their clothes.  All I could think of that was Ms. Frizzle.  I am aware that she isn’t real, but her dresses were always perfect.  Although how she always wore pumps while exploring the inside of Arnold’s digestive track or finding out how to get out of a jar while tiny is probably the most impressive part.  We also discusses that no one wears prints.  Yet again, The Frizz.  Those are some loud prints.  However, that discussion was almost 2 years ago so the prints thing has really changed.   I think I would like to dress like Ms. Frizzle.  Maybe not those exact dresses but something close.  I think it’s the collars, I can’t pull that off.

Inspiration: Lace

One of my favorite trends is lace over a dress.  One of my least favorite trends are those lace shorts I’ve been seeing women wear.  The difference between the two is what they do for a woman’s body.  The dress is cute and feminine.  It makes women look like they are women and adorable while doing so.   The shorts are always too baggy in the back or too short or too long or too something.  It’s a great idea.  It should breath and keep you cool but it never flatters a figure while being worn.  However I will take these shorts every day over a lace crop top.  Although a super cute idea they can go from fashion genius to fashion desister in less time than it takes for the top to be put on.  When worn with high wasted pants, they are great but many times in practical situations they are the first to break the rule of the belly button.  You can show mid-drift but either above or below the belly button.  It’s the easiest way to keep things classy.  So here are some of my favorite lace pieces.  I’m almost finished making my own high-waisted lace skirt.  I can’t wait to show you all when it’s finished.

Style Icons

My personal style icons are Tina Fey and the character of Bernadette on Big Bang Theory.

The first part of all of this is starts with the glasses.  Tina Fey’s glasses are iconic now but Bernadette  has a great pair too.  Similar but different.

images-1 images

Both are attention grabbers that really will get noticed.  I wear a pair that are black wire frames with blue on the inside.  They really channel Tina’s.  I’ve been wearing one like both of theirs since about 2006.  I’ve had glasses since 1st grade so there has to be something to make them interesting or else, I guess I could switch to contacts but I hate the idea of touching my eyes every morning and night.

Sweaters.  Bernadette is a master of the cardigan, Ms. Fey is more commonly seen in the pull over variety, but as Liz Lemon rocked the TGS zip up hoodie.  I realize that it seems silly to mention but how often do you see women in the media wearing clothes that are meant to keep them warm and comfy without it trying to emphasize that they are slobs?  Liz wore what she was comfortable in because she had about a hundred people on any day to organize and make sure they all got their work done.  I think it’s awesome when a character is real.  In every production house I have ever been in no one wears anything other than jeans and hoodies during the colder months.  Maybe a blazer if the clients, advertizers, or executives are coming around but anything else isn’t practical in a work place where even the bosses have to do heavy lifting.

Bernadette’s big, full, floral printed dresses and skirts are a staple of my wardrobe.  Something that gets you noticed but isn’t too loud.  Something you can wear for a walk or to the office, or out to lunch.  Perfection has been achieved.

Inspiration- Prints

Prints, after many years, are coming back.  Thank goodness.   I have always loved prints.  I used to have this amazing polkadot dress in 2007 that was not really fashionable but I wore it anyway.  It was navy blue with white dots.  It was cut into sections going down about every six inches the dots would change sizes.  I still miss that dress 5 years later.  As I sit in a coffee shop right now four people are wearing prints, an abstract watercolor inspired print, a pasily, a plad and I have on a cartoon skirt.

I can’t stand the slogan teeshirt, so many of them are something along the lines of look how smart I am, or look how good looking I am, which will only be worn by the dumbest and least attractive people.  Then again if an increadibly good looking genius wore them that would probably be worse.  But so long slogan tees and hello prints.   Not every print works on every person.  Andy Reid, when he was the coach of the Eagles, used to wear this shirt that was vertical strips and that was never a good look.  But that could be more of an Andy Reid problem then a stripes problem.  There are so many new and inventive ways to use prints that solids just aren’t fun enough to use.
