How Do You Feel?

I went shopping with a friend from work this weekend, we were working on updating her wardrobe, just getting a couple of staples that she could mix into what she already has and elevate her style as a whole. Every time she would try on a new piece of clothing I would ask her how she felt, after the second or third outfit I realized we were speaking about two different kinds of feelings, she was telling me how the clothes felt in a physical sense, were they soft, tight, lose, anything like that. I was confused, that wasn’t telling me anything. I realized I was talking about emotions, was it making her feel confidents, happy, excited, did she feel sexy in what she was wearing. We recalibrated and met somewhere in the middle. She started telling me about how she was feeling, did it make her feel good about herself, and I listened to when she thought something wasn’t fitting the right way. We discussed what to look for in proper fit of a garnment, and we talked about how sometimes she was wearing the wrong size trying to hide her body. I am also not a tiny lady, and I know the allure of wearing an outfit too big to hid the parts of my body that I don’t like to look at in the mirror when I go to the bathroom or catch my reflection in a window. It can feel nice to pretend that things are different, but I am who I am, and there are some really nice parts of my body, just like my friend’s body.  Sure there are things I could make “better” but that would also mean giving up cheese, and craft service at work, and I don’t want to do that, if I did, I already would have.

However, I have ended up on a tangent about how wonderful cheese is, and even if that is true, it is not my point.  My point is that when I am wearing clothes, and even more, when I am cosplaying, I am looking to FEEL a certain way,  I want to embody the character that I’m playing, that’s why I spend a solid hour or more coming up with the right pose.  I want to know I have the whole package and that I love what it is that I’m wearing.

I hope when everyone gets dressed in the morning they don’t ask how this looks, but how do I feel, because that is the key, for me, to being happy all day and not bored by lunch.

Inspiration: Entrepreneurs

For the last couple of months I’ve been casting a show all about people following their dreams. It’s been really fun to get to talk to people who have such a passion for different things that I thought I could never imagine having. My boss and I were talking in a coffee shop in Atlanta about what would be our dream business that had nothing to do with working in TV. I knew mine right away. It was the idea of having classy women’s nerd clothing. I think there’s such a hole in the market right now. Don’t get me wrong, I own more graphic tees and nerdy skirts than one person really should. And I’ve seen plenty of Black Milk leggings, I own Her Universe clothes, but they’re still not sophisticated. I know that would be my concept, but I have no idea what that even means. A man can add a cool belt buckle or an awesome tie, but what do we woman have? I think an awesome nerdy pair of heels is a great start for that nerdy touch to an office. I do work in an office where I can (but technically am not allowed to) wear shorts to work when it’s hot, but I’m not really sure I could handle working anywhere that doesn’t let me let my geek flag fly. However, even in my non-traditional office there are so many things that are not ok.  My office is about 65% women, and it’s not a place where women wear teeshirts on a regular basis, but my boss doesn’t go more than 3 days without a Star Wars tee or sporting his favorite sports team.  I guess that says something more about attitudes than what specifically is going on in my office.  About 3 out of 5 day a week I wear my TeeShirt of the day hoodies to work, so I may just be saying crazy things.  Either way, I would like there to be more classic and classy nerd clothing that I could wear out.  Internet, please get on that.  Thanks.

Where do you get your Nerd Gear from?

My favorite nerd apparel are, hands down, the things I’ve made myself.  I can take such pride every time I go out and someone say cute skirt, because it’s not just how I’m wearing it, it’s everything about that outfit I can take credit for.  For the clothes that I buy it’s the stuff that comes from the shirt of the day sites, it’s more directed to what I really love, which pretty much means Doctor Who, but I have some pretty cool shirts and things that I got from mass market stores that I’ve never seen anyone else wear.  For me that’s important, there can’t be too many of whatever it is that I’m wearing that I see on a regular basis (except for my shoes, I do love my Uggs)  I need to know that I’m different enough when picking my clothes.  I have some great stuff from Old Navy off of their clearance rack from the men’s section.  For me, I find the best stuff in weird places.  That’s one of the reasons that I like wearing my nerd gear. I get to be different in a way that’s not annoying and in your face but also not for everyone. I have a great shirt that says Vader for President. When people take the time to read it they usually smile and go, “well, can’t be much worse.” I think that once I decided that I was just going to wear whatever I wanted, geeky or not, it made me happier. I got to say I don’t care and do what I want and that, for me, is what nerd fashion is all about.

What a nerdy weekend

This saturday was not only May the 4th, or Star Wars Day, but it was also Free Comic Book day.  What a great day to be a nerd.  I, of course, had to dress for the occasion.  I wore my Darth Vader t-shirt and Star Wars skirt.  When I went to the comic book store, it was awesome seeing storm troopers everywhere.  I also got a graphic novel I’ve been looking for, for about a year and a half- FEAR ITSELF.  It’s been so hard to find it.  You can’t shake a stick in a comic book store without finding part of the story, the Captain America story or the Thor story, but finding the miniseries has been so hard.  I finally got it.  I’m super pumped.  And I got to find it while being all decked out in my nerd clothes.  I will be reading it later wearing my Marvel skirt, reading my Marvel story.  It’s perfect.

Although, the comic books for free comic book day this year weren’t as good as they have been the past couple of years, oh well.  You win some, you lose some.

Anyone else have a good free comic book day?

SteamPunk Duct Tape

Yesterday I was playing on stumbleupon and came across this picture

corsetfront

and then it occurred to me, duct tape corsets for Steampunk Star Trek.  My brother is going as a Klingon starfleet engeneer, a bit of a cross between Nog and  Worf, where I made his warrior’s sash out of soda top chain mail.  So now the plan is upcycled steampunk Star Trek.  Although I like the idea of getting real corsets I just can’t imagine spending so much money on a costume that I can’t really add into my everyday wardrobe.    Well, there’s a Star Trek Convention in the next town over from me this weekend celebrating Deep Space 9, let’s see if I can get it all ready in time.

Nerdy Leggings

So there are some great nerdy leggings.  I love this pair of TARDIS leggings.

But this pair of Star Wars leggings

makes me feel like they are trying to take advantage of the idea that as soon as you put something nerdy on a piece of clothing that we will buy it up.  I think the difference for me is that the first pair has been designed for a women’s legs where the second isn’t designed for women to look good in.  Most women have thighs and all I can envision is Luke’s face getting pulled and squished in all sorts of awkward ways.    The Australian company Black Milk is known for their nerdy leggings and dresses and shirts but they are not necessarily the most flattering to the women who have any kind of curve.  They look so cool and I totally want a pair.  But I don’t know if it will really work on someone like me.   Below are a bunch of nerdy leggings, some I love and some I don’t.

Nerd Nail Art

I was out to dinner recently where my waitress had nails like this:

It was pretty cool.  I wish I had the eye-hand coordination to learn how to do things like this.  But I’m more of a crazy solid color kind of girl.

But check these options out too:
