How Do You Feel?

I went shopping with a friend from work this weekend, we were working on updating her wardrobe, just getting a couple of staples that she could mix into what she already has and elevate her style as a whole. Every time she would try on a new piece of clothing I would ask her how she felt, after the second or third outfit I realized we were speaking about two different kinds of feelings, she was telling me how the clothes felt in a physical sense, were they soft, tight, lose, anything like that. I was confused, that wasn’t telling me anything. I realized I was talking about emotions, was it making her feel confidents, happy, excited, did she feel sexy in what she was wearing. We recalibrated and met somewhere in the middle. She started telling me about how she was feeling, did it make her feel good about herself, and I listened to when she thought something wasn’t fitting the right way. We discussed what to look for in proper fit of a garnment, and we talked about how sometimes she was wearing the wrong size trying to hide her body. I am also not a tiny lady, and I know the allure of wearing an outfit too big to hid the parts of my body that I don’t like to look at in the mirror when I go to the bathroom or catch my reflection in a window. It can feel nice to pretend that things are different, but I am who I am, and there are some really nice parts of my body, just like my friend’s body.  Sure there are things I could make “better” but that would also mean giving up cheese, and craft service at work, and I don’t want to do that, if I did, I already would have.

However, I have ended up on a tangent about how wonderful cheese is, and even if that is true, it is not my point.  My point is that when I am wearing clothes, and even more, when I am cosplaying, I am looking to FEEL a certain way,  I want to embody the character that I’m playing, that’s why I spend a solid hour or more coming up with the right pose.  I want to know I have the whole package and that I love what it is that I’m wearing.

I hope when everyone gets dressed in the morning they don’t ask how this looks, but how do I feel, because that is the key, for me, to being happy all day and not bored by lunch.

Hey, I remember you

Hey it’s been a while.  I got really busy with work.  I am so excited for you to see some of the great stuff I’ve been making for TV..  I drove from New Jersey to California in a smart car.  The United States is really big.  When I was a kid we drove from NJ to Disney World, I thought that was far, but man, I had no idea.  This is my car

CAM00788

It was PACKED with all of my stuff, my dad, and me.  I’m sure you’re sitting there thinking what does this have to do with being a nerd or fashion and well it does.  My car is a TARDIS.

I swear to you as small as those things are I fit everything in it all at one and moved twice.  Ones from New Jersey to Orange County California and the other from Orange County to North Hollywood, LA.  It’s pretty awesome.

Nerd Fashion doesn’t have to be confined to what you wear on your body, Nerd Fashion is being free enough to being a nerd and feeling good about it.  Trust me, when you see someone driving around in a SmartCar, you know they’re a nerd.

Where do you get your Nerd Gear from?

My favorite nerd apparel are, hands down, the things I’ve made myself.  I can take such pride every time I go out and someone say cute skirt, because it’s not just how I’m wearing it, it’s everything about that outfit I can take credit for.  For the clothes that I buy it’s the stuff that comes from the shirt of the day sites, it’s more directed to what I really love, which pretty much means Doctor Who, but I have some pretty cool shirts and things that I got from mass market stores that I’ve never seen anyone else wear.  For me that’s important, there can’t be too many of whatever it is that I’m wearing that I see on a regular basis (except for my shoes, I do love my Uggs)  I need to know that I’m different enough when picking my clothes.  I have some great stuff from Old Navy off of their clearance rack from the men’s section.  For me, I find the best stuff in weird places.  That’s one of the reasons that I like wearing my nerd gear. I get to be different in a way that’s not annoying and in your face but also not for everyone. I have a great shirt that says Vader for President. When people take the time to read it they usually smile and go, “well, can’t be much worse.” I think that once I decided that I was just going to wear whatever I wanted, geeky or not, it made me happier. I got to say I don’t care and do what I want and that, for me, is what nerd fashion is all about.

Hot Topic

Hot Topic’s main game right now is pop culture.  Particularly nerdy pop culture.  There are sections of their stores devoted to super heroes and Doctor Who and anything else that gets nerds excited.  But walking into this store there is no love of the subject.  It leads to the fake nerd.  Nerds and geeks are trendy.  There is no two ways about it.  But loving the new Star Treks does not make you a nerd.  The JJ Abrams movies aren’t even make fore Star Trek fans, he’s wasn’t a Star Trek fan when he started making them.  They were awesome space story movies but after seeing them they left me missing Captains Cisco or Janeway.  I feel like having the clothes so easily accessible is awesome for nerds but when I see someone wearing something that says Police Box or is wearing a Star Wars shirt and I start nerding out to them and they give me a blank look I know it’s all over.  I do believe that everyone is a nerd, whether you are a nerd about fashion or football you are a nerd.  Fantasy sports are just Dungeon and Dragons for jocks.  But it’s like wearing a band’s teeshirt and not listening to the music.  There is something a little wrong about wearing, say a Dark Side of the Moon cover art shirt, without knowing or listening to Led Zeppelin.  I know here I am contradicting myself from a earlier post saying that one of the best parts about SteamPunk is that you don’t have to know everything about it to dress up as it.  However, I do feel as if this is different.  When I go SteamPunk I know what it is, when I wear a superhero costume I at least have a working knowledge of who they are.  But when you walk about to someone wearing a TARDIS shirt and ask if it’s bigger in the inside and they don’t know what that means, it might not be the right shirt for them.  There is nothing wrong with pop culture being nerd culture, but maybe before someone wears a Superboy shirt, they should know who Superboy is.

Tattoos

I can’t believe I haven’t talked about nerdy tattoos yet.  I have mixed feelings about tattoos.  I love them on other people.  I think they are so cool and interesting.  Except face tattoos.  I also hate face cakes, the ones with the edible pictures on them, so maybe it’s just a face thing.  I really want to get one in theory but I’m terrified of needles.  I also know for me I would probably get bored with the design.  When I get a manicure I’ve spent too much money on it to pick it off and change the color but after a certain point that’s all I want to do.  I can’t imagine putting something on my body I can’t change.

Latte art

A couple of days ago I was sitting in one of my favorite coffee shops writing and I noticed a sign on the door talking about a contest for latte art.  I started thinking about all of the cool things you can do with latte foam.  Now, may I present to you a collection of nerd foam.

Nerdy Leggings

So there are some great nerdy leggings.  I love this pair of TARDIS leggings.

But this pair of Star Wars leggings

star-wars-black-milk-clothing-7

makes me feel like they are trying to take advantage of the idea that as soon as you put something nerdy on a piece of clothing that we will buy it up.  I think the difference for me is that the first pair has been designed for a women’s legs where the second isn’t designed for women to look good in.  Most women have thighs and all I can envision is Luke’s face getting pulled and squished in all sorts of awkward ways.    The Australian company Black Milk is known for their nerdy leggings and dresses and shirts but they are not necessarily the most flattering to the women who have any kind of curve.  They look so cool and I totally want a pair.  But I don’t know if it will really work on someone like me.   Below are a bunch of nerdy leggings, some I love and some I don’t.

Nerds and Crafting

From my experience nerds love to craft.  I sew, crochet, knit, bake and am a film maker by profession.  I also dance, play the sax and clarinet, and sing.  In the art world I’m like a pig in slop.  And I’m not the only one.  There is a reason there are blogs like Geek Crafts, Bored and Crafty, Pixelated Mushroom (even if she hasn’t posted in 3 months) and so many more.  I personally eat them up.

But what brings these two groups together?  So many nerds are crafter and crafters are nerds.  I think it has to do with both groups are smart and like to be constantly stimulated.  Imagination is the most important skill for a crafter who wants to create anything beyond exactly what a pattern calls for, even just the first question of what color to make a hat or what is the right picture to take when going out to work on their photography portfolios.

My mom is a cross stitcher, she calls it just paint by numbers but how excited she gets when she’s looking at all the different colors of floss or all the different patters and what to do with the finished product, there is a lot of imagination happening.

Screen shot 2013-03-28 at 10.24.50 AM

I created this costume from clothes I already had in my wardrobe.

Nerds are the same way.  We watch our favorite show and our brains start turning about what way can we bring this into our lives.  I just watched the re-imagined Battlestar Glacatica last month for the first time and by the end of the third season I was already planning on making my own costumes of my favorite couple, Callie and the Chief.  We put stickers on our laptops and Starfleet Academy Alumni window clings on our cars.  That is awesome.

Imagination, that’s what the world really needs more of.  Don’t forget to use yours today.

SteamPunk

I love SteamPunk! I think it has an incredibly equalizing property that most cosplay doesn’t have.  What I mean is that when I dress up as Batgirl, no matter how much I love Barbra Gordon and how much I know about her, it never feels like it’s enough when I go to shows.  Someone will inevitably start talking to me about her and there will come a time in the conversation where I start smiling and nodding.  And I know a lot about her.  It just never feels like enough.  When I wear my Dalek dress, I will run into another Whovian who will put my knowledge to shame.  It’s not that I’m not obsessive.  Ask my friends, I am a constant fountain of weird nerdy babble, I make nerdy clothes that I can wear to the office, but I’m obsessive all over the place.

Nathan Fillion as Rick Castle learning about SteamPunk in Season 3 episode Punked

This is where SteamPunk is wonderful.  SteamPunk looks cool and it doesn’t have a huge backstory I need to know to wear the clothes.  I understand the concept, steam powered engines, we never split the atom, futuristic Victorian style.  All of these things are awesome.  Also, I have yet to mean a NerdGirl who doesn’t like any excuse to wear a corset.
