How Do You Feel?

I went shopping with a friend from work this weekend, we were working on updating her wardrobe, just getting a couple of staples that she could mix into what she already has and elevate her style as a whole. Every time she would try on a new piece of clothing I would ask her how she felt, after the second or third outfit I realized we were speaking about two different kinds of feelings, she was telling me how the clothes felt in a physical sense, were they soft, tight, lose, anything like that. I was confused, that wasn’t telling me anything. I realized I was talking about emotions, was it making her feel confidents, happy, excited, did she feel sexy in what she was wearing. We recalibrated and met somewhere in the middle. She started telling me about how she was feeling, did it make her feel good about herself, and I listened to when she thought something wasn’t fitting the right way. We discussed what to look for in proper fit of a garnment, and we talked about how sometimes she was wearing the wrong size trying to hide her body. I am also not a tiny lady, and I know the allure of wearing an outfit too big to hid the parts of my body that I don’t like to look at in the mirror when I go to the bathroom or catch my reflection in a window. It can feel nice to pretend that things are different, but I am who I am, and there are some really nice parts of my body, just like my friend’s body.  Sure there are things I could make “better” but that would also mean giving up cheese, and craft service at work, and I don’t want to do that, if I did, I already would have.

However, I have ended up on a tangent about how wonderful cheese is, and even if that is true, it is not my point.  My point is that when I am wearing clothes, and even more, when I am cosplaying, I am looking to FEEL a certain way,  I want to embody the character that I’m playing, that’s why I spend a solid hour or more coming up with the right pose.  I want to know I have the whole package and that I love what it is that I’m wearing.

I hope when everyone gets dressed in the morning they don’t ask how this looks, but how do I feel, because that is the key, for me, to being happy all day and not bored by lunch.

Inspiration: Entrepreneurs

For the last couple of months I’ve been casting a show all about people following their dreams. It’s been really fun to get to talk to people who have such a passion for different things that I thought I could never imagine having. My boss and I were talking in a coffee shop in Atlanta about what would be our dream business that had nothing to do with working in TV. I knew mine right away. It was the idea of having classy women’s nerd clothing. I think there’s such a hole in the market right now. Don’t get me wrong, I own more graphic tees and nerdy skirts than one person really should. And I’ve seen plenty of Black Milk leggings, I own Her Universe clothes, but they’re still not sophisticated. I know that would be my concept, but I have no idea what that even means. A man can add a cool belt buckle or an awesome tie, but what do we woman have? I think an awesome nerdy pair of heels is a great start for that nerdy touch to an office. I do work in an office where I can (but technically am not allowed to) wear shorts to work when it’s hot, but I’m not really sure I could handle working anywhere that doesn’t let me let my geek flag fly. However, even in my non-traditional office there are so many things that are not ok.  My office is about 65% women, and it’s not a place where women wear teeshirts on a regular basis, but my boss doesn’t go more than 3 days without a Star Wars tee or sporting his favorite sports team.  I guess that says something more about attitudes than what specifically is going on in my office.  About 3 out of 5 day a week I wear my TeeShirt of the day hoodies to work, so I may just be saying crazy things.  Either way, I would like there to be more classic and classy nerd clothing that I could wear out.  Internet, please get on that.  Thanks.

Inspiration: Headbands

I love what headbands do.  They keep my hair out of my face.  And for that I will love them forever. When I think of headbands, I think of Gossip Girl and Blair Waldorf.  It was my guilty pleasure show, however I will admit the first few years, it was actually a pretty good show.  I just made a new one for myself from the hem of an old teeshirt that I was refashioning into an infinity scarf, which is surprisingly warm.

No matter what the accessory that keeps my hair in check is the ultimate hair tool.

Awesome Geek Sneeks

Canvas sneakers are a place that you can really add some nerdy flair to your wardrobe.

images-2images-4images-3 images-7 images-1 Unknown images-8 images images-5 images-6 They’re subtle especially if you’re wearing pants.  Geek shoes can go from the casual All Star Chuck or canvas Keds to a going out flat or a custom heel.  There are so man awesome options and infinite ways to make it all your own.

Armor

Armor is so cool. The way it shines in the light and protects from swords and arrows. Chain mail disperses the blow, and is movable. We obviously don’t use them any more in battle in the literal sense. We use tanks and drones. But that doesn’t make middle ages fashion any less cool.

Above is a more literal interpretation.  Below is a more modern every day wear version of armor.

Then of course there are all of the superheroes that have armor, Iron Man, Thor, Death Stroke, Captain America, Batman, Aquaman.  The list goes on and on.   Armor is cool and definately super nerdy  in the best way.

T-Shirt of the day

I am completely obsessed with the T-shirt of the day websites.  My favorites are RiptApparel, Tee Fury, and Shirt Punch  When I first open my computer in the morning it’s check my comic strips, check my email, then see what today’s batch of t-shirts are.  I’ve only ever bought 2 because I need it to be something that i think about all day and then get or else I would own more shirts than days in the month.  I still  have a problem with all the shirts my college gave out at events

supertough-girls-detail

I think it’s such a cool concept and I know that every time I get one of the shirts off of these sites the artist will get paid something and the companies aren’t giant multinational conglomerates.  The image above is now on one of my favorite zip-up hoodies that I wear all the time.

It’s cool that they cover all sorts of counter culture topics.  This one was a mash-up of two cartoons that I really enjoy, Powerpuff Girls and Super Best Friends Forever. (BTW they just added Powerpuff Girls to Netflix if anyone wants to watch it)  There are things that I get and things that I don’t and I think that makes it really cool.  My nerd cred is fully intact but when it’s wresting shirts there is just no way I’ll ever get that, however give me a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I get really excited.  I do have a job where I get to wear T-shirts almost all of the time and that does make these sites more appealing, I get to wear my cool shirts whenever I want as opposed to someone who has to wear suits.  But in the business casual world a cool skirt with an awesome t-shirt and a blazer is an awesome way to bring some nerdy style to the office.

What makes Cosplay Special

Halloween for non-nerds is the only time of year they get to come as they aren’t.  Nerds have collectively stated that we all love to dress up and would like to do it as often as possible.  Most of the time at conventions the costumes are more elaborate than at Halloween.  Whenever I think about Halloween I think of the scene in Mean Girls where Cady went to the party and the girls are all in animals because they had on ears and tales where as Cady went all out on a less than sexy outfit. However, in no way am I saying that nerd costumes aren’t sexy.  I want to remove all booth babes and models from the conversation of cosplay just because they are being paid to dress-up in costume so any connection to the character isn’t necessarily there, not that it can’t be but I’ve run into more of them that don’t know who they’re dressed as than love the character.

Cosplay comes all time of year.  There is no limit to when or how many times a costume can and should be worn.  Some of the best costumes can have bits and pieces incorporated into a normal wardrobe.  A shirt that can be worn to the grocery store or a funky belt that looks great with a going out dress.  Yeah a costume bought from a store is easy but then it’s 40 bucks you’ll only wear once or twice, a costume made is something that can have more uses than just the first intended one.

Cosplay also is about the character you’re playing as much as the outfit that you’re wearing.  People like to pretend, that’s why we all love movies and TV shows.  We like to escape.  When kids pretend no one thinks twice about it but if you’re over the age of 10 and call a friend to come over and want to play princesses or super heroes the other person probably isn’t going to go for it, cosplay is the chance to play pretend and get to think “Today, I am a Super Hero.  Today I can fly, or talk to animals, or have telekinesis.”  And all of that is pretty cool.  We don’t need to do it every day but every once in a while I like to pretend that I can fly.

Inspiration- Prints

Prints, after many years, are coming back.  Thank goodness.   I have always loved prints.  I used to have this amazing polkadot dress in 2007 that was not really fashionable but I wore it anyway.  It was navy blue with white dots.  It was cut into sections going down about every six inches the dots would change sizes.  I still miss that dress 5 years later.  As I sit in a coffee shop right now four people are wearing prints, an abstract watercolor inspired print, a pasily, a plad and I have on a cartoon skirt.

I can’t stand the slogan teeshirt, so many of them are something along the lines of look how smart I am, or look how good looking I am, which will only be worn by the dumbest and least attractive people.  Then again if an increadibly good looking genius wore them that would probably be worse.  But so long slogan tees and hello prints.   Not every print works on every person.  Andy Reid, when he was the coach of the Eagles, used to wear this shirt that was vertical strips and that was never a good look.  But that could be more of an Andy Reid problem then a stripes problem.  There are so many new and inventive ways to use prints that solids just aren’t fun enough to use.

Everyday cosplay

Do you ever wear outfits knowing that you’re playing dress-up and no one around you gets it?  Sometimes I wear outfits that Amy Pond wore in Doctor Who or that Claudia wore in Warehouse 13 because I get to pretend.

My brother has an outfit where he dresses as Captain Jack from Doctor Who/Torchwood.  It’s not something weird or noticeable.  Almost no one at school knows what he’s doing, they just tell him, “Cool Suspends,” which he is all for.  It’s like a private joke that only the nerdiest among us will ever notice.

I think it’s a great way to express yourself. Men get cool ties to wear to work. Women don’t have as many options in a traditional office setting, especially if

Couples Costumes

Couples costumes are some of the best costumes for comic cons.  For last comic con I created a Green Arrow and Black Canary costume for my parents, I’m currently working on a Battlestar Glacatica costume for my boyfriend and me.  My friend and I did a Batgirl and Robin for Halloween a couple of years ago.  Couples don’t have to be a couple , I’ve seen twin brothers and sisters do Luke and Leia.  Fathers and sons can do Batman and Robin, which is awesome.  (RIP Damien Wayne)  Groups of friends can be the crew of Serenity.

I don't know these kids, I just think it's one of the cutest cosplays ever.

It’s not that cosplay isn’t fun on your own but if you can have someone doing it with you it gets more fun.  I enjoy going out in costume with my friends and acting as if nothing is different about us.  It’s fun just to be different sometimes.  What are some of the fun things that you and your friends have done?
